There is no lack of information or choices for women when seeking a new product, but wading through the hype can be difficult.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Most women, whether 15 or 50,\u00a0probably have a bag or drawer of discarded cosmetics abandoned along the way as the quest for perfect skin, healthy nails, or luxurious hair continues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The beauty\u00a0industry is\u00a0huge.\u00a0In Canada,\u00a0the<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/814648\/cosmetics-market-value-canada\/\">\u00a0cosmetics market<\/a> is expected to exceed $21-billion Canadian by 2021. With the competition so fierce and the growing number of beauty bloggers, influencers, and entrepreneurs it\u2019s difficult to choose who to believe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Several companies are promoting greener, more natural and chemical free products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe have noticed that our customers have a huge desire to learn about what goes into their product,\u201d said Sina Kamran,\u00a0manager and associate of\u00a0Lush products at Square One mall. \u201cOur goal at Lush is to help describe the ingredients and provide an easy and effective way for consumers to get their information.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"8BGKeRy9_Zs\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How It&#039;s Made: Floating Island | Lush Kitchen\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8BGKeRy9_Zs?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption>Lush products are made with synthetic and natural ingredients.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">However,\u00a0not all skin care products are made the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">The term organic or natural can be confusing. The CanadianFood Inspection Agency (CFIA) has rules on what kinds of products are organic. The CFIA stated that natural health products cannot be qualified as organic. Basically, feed, seed, and agricultural products are the only familiar ingredients that can be certified organic in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">When it comes to non-food products, there are no rules for labeling and marketing organic beauty products in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">Basically, any company can name their products as natural and describe the word in the way they want.\u00a0 Companies are not hesitant to just stick the natural label on their product in order to sell out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">Jennifer Freitas, founder of the Truth &amp; Beauty company says, \u201cCompanies like Keihls and Lush are not natural products I would not use, their products, they include a lot of minerals that oxidizes and scents that use preservatives that are not safe and natural.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">Anna Lee Boschetto, editor-in-chief of Salon magazine reminds consumers to read the labels and make sure of the ingredients in any product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter whether you are buying a natural or non-organic beauty product or a combination of both, consumers have still to be aware of the ingredients,\u201d Boschetto said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">Consulting a skin specialist or dermatologist is best, since a product might cause allergies or sensitivity with the skin.\u00a0\u201cUnderstanding what is in your product is very important which is why Lush makes sure consumers are aware of what they are applying on their skin,\u201d said Kamran.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">Boschetto said consulting with a skin specialist or dermatologist is often a good idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">\u201cMany women think that if I\u2019m choosing natural and organic then its automatically going to be better for our skin, however that isn\u2019t necessarily the case,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lush.ca\/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwkoDmBRCcARIsAG3xzl8JaxbU0mNtv0kfIR0mp5CPi_Seoi8ot1TAT4gYcR1hiW6UVjlDe64aAg2yEALw_wcB\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Lush<\/span><\/a> does try to use more natural ingredients, however, there\u00a0are\u00a0some products that you can\u2019t recreate naturally, for example lathering agents are not something that occur in a natural environment,\u201d said Kamran.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">\u201cWe do believe in using safe synthetics, but that being said, we do try to find innovative ways to introduce natural replacement for synthetics, for example we have a self-preserving line where all the\u00a0products are paraben free and the use of natural ingredients as the actual preservative itself that is made with natural ingredients.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">\u00a0\u201cThere are loopholes around cosmetics that claim they\u2019re green but really aren\u2019t, I would say 87 percent of our products are vegan. There is a large portion of our products that\u00a0have some synthetic content, for example sulfate or carbon content,\u201d said Kamran.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">The\u00a0brand\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thetruthbeautycompany.com\/\"><span style=\"color: black;\">The Truth Beauty<\/span><\/a> offers\u00a0a selection of natural and organic skincare,\u00a0hair care\u00a0and cosmetic brands. The company thrives on explaining to consumers the harmful chemicals that\u00a0affect our bodies and environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Helvetica; color: black;\">Freitas said,\u201cevaluating the chemicals in my house and my diet is what helped me to switch my products to natural.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"xIhi6URDDFM\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Me at The Truth Beauty Company\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xIhi6URDDFM?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">She\u00a0started the company after an extended research on chemicals, additives and the process of consumable elements. After her research, she decided to alter her personal care and food habits in order to ensure the safety and quality of ingredients for herself and her family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhen we are looking for ingredients, we make sure that they are free from the typical nasties,\u201d said Freitas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThese would be synthetic ingredients that would be traditionally used in personal care products, for example sodium sulfate, \u2026. And of course, parabens which we know is hugely problematic,\u201d says Freitas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The natural beauty industry will always position themselves as a greener and cleaner substitute, however today with online reviews and social media, we are aware of the ingredients that are promoted worldwide as natural.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cA\u00a0lot of the ingredients used in conventional skin care and cosmetics\u00a0those ingredients can be\u00a0bioaccumulate, meaning that they don\u2019t actually leave the environment, which\u00a0affects our waterways, plants and animals,\u201d said Freitas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Getting obsessed with the natural beauty world is very easy, because natural products show fast results, but many of us forget that different skin types and products can also react differently<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIn the Canadian market there is a lot of great companies that are producing great all natural and alternative skin care products, it\u2019s definitely an exciting time in the beauty market,\u201d said Broschetto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Freitas said her clients come in with acne or eczema all the time, \u201cEveryone wants immediate results of course, but natural beauty doesn\u2019t work that way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Different ingredients are best suited for different people, \u201cFor example people with acne skin should lean towards natural oils including dry oils like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sephora.com\/product\/100-percent-pure-argan-oil-P218700?skuId=1299205&amp;om_mmc=ppc-GG_794075886_48174188144_aud-610853374942:dsa-163472404107__189150741288_9000985_c&amp;country_switch=ca&amp;lang=en&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwkoDmBRCcARIsAG3xzl9qE-hHOf-gUR5KOB0P7smGO-CXGjVQH_kmXclfPbAurdkPIzFWBy8aAlAlEALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\">argan or jojoba oil<\/a>,\u201d said Freitas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Many products today have a more organic alternative, from using coconut oil as makeup remover [to] applying honey as a natural homemade facemask.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Some clients lean towards non-organic products because they think its harmful and irritating on their skin, when the trick is to find the right ingredient for your skin. The products that makes your skin glow flawlessly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Freitas suggests her clients use tree tea oil. \u201cIt is not harmful, however applying directly on the skin can be harmful,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cSaying that something is natural that doesn\u2019t mean anything, it\u2019s a play on words and I don\u2019t think that the client or consumer should go looking for something that said it\u2019s just natural, the consumer should familiarize themselves with what chemicals are most problematic and look to avoid those,\u201d said Freitas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Beauty brands need to ask themselves whether they are creating gimmicks or delivering real natural products to us, \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t be looking for buzz words like vegan or cruelty free because those things don\u2019t mean anything,\u201d said Freitas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Many have different opinions on natural beauty products and the benefits we see on our skin and the planet, upfront it may seem more expensive because of the process and ingredients used. \u201cNatural products are made without the typical preservatives and fillers and emulsifiers, you are getting a lot more of a concentrated product by choosing natural,\u201d said Freitas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhen it comes to hair care and skin care, a group of clients do have a preference\u00a0towards more natural products, but ultimately all consumers are looking for a product\u00a0that works well even though they might not be natural, its going back to performance,\u201dsaid Boschetto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It\u2019s important to be aware that natural and organic brands are still retailers and are doing the same as non-organic brands, their aim is to sell as many products just like any other beauty retailer.
