{"id":4087,"date":"2023-04-21T14:15:15","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T18:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vpms1.humber.smartmanagedservers.com\/scribemag\/?p=4087"},"modified":"2023-04-26T15:31:46","modified_gmt":"2023-04-26T19:31:46","slug":"the-costs-of-online-betting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/humberjournalism.com\/scribemag\/news\/the-costs-of-online-betting\/","title":{"rendered":"The costs of online betting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By Shayonna Cole<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Linval Thomas, a 42-year-old gambler located in Brampton, said that his gambling habit started small and he didn\u2019t expect it to become an issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It started on his thirtieth birthday when he received a lottery ticket from a friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never really thought much about gambling or betting before in my whole life,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canadian government made it legal in 2021 to place bets on the outcome of a single event, known as \u201csingle-wager betting.\u201d Score Media and Gaming Incorporated\u2019s popular sports betting app called \u201cThe Score\u201d is one of Canada\u2019s biggest digital media platforms for sports-related gambling. In their <a href=\"https:\/\/sencanada.ca\/content\/sen\/committee\/432\/BANC\/Briefs\/ScoreMedia_e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">submission to the Standing Committee<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/sencanada.ca\/content\/sen\/committee\/432\/BANC\/Briefs\/ScoreMedia_e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bill C-218<\/a>, the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act in favour of single-wager betting, they claim the Bill will provide more \u201csafe and responsible\u201d free wagering.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this law makes it more accessible to users to make small profits from the comfort of their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the late 1870s, the Canadian government passed laws banning gambling and gaming.&nbsp; The Canadian Criminal Code officially prohibited all forms of gambling in 1892.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canadian government saw the value in gaming, especially with lotteries. The Criminal Code was changed in 1969 to permit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jackpotlawyer.ca\/a-brief-history-of-the-lottery-in-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">provincial and federal lotteries<\/a>, which led to the first openings of lottery games in Manitoba and Quebec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBefore I knew it, I started buying a lottery ticket every week and it was something that I could easily manage,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cI guess the addiction started when my buddy told me about the games he bets on. I think that\u2019s when I started losing myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to<a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/75-006-x\/2022001\/article\/00006-eng.htm\"> Statistics Canada<\/a>, a Government agency site, gambling is common in Canada and affects 64.5 per cent of Canadians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shuftipro.com\/blog\/a-detailed-insight-into-canadian-gambling-industry-2022-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Canadian Gaming Association<\/a> reported that Canada has the eighth-highest number of consumers who gamble, and the gambling industry provides 135 000 jobs which are worth $15 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lisa O&#8217;Ryan, a 35-year-old stay-at-home mother of four, sa can you see my list ys that she\u2019s worried that her nineteen-year-old son is following in her husband\u2019s gambling footsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>He doesn&#8217;t see what this is doing to our son.<\/p><cite>Lisa O&#8217;Ryan<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe has always looked up to his father for as long as I can remember,\u201d O\u2019Ryan said. \u201cIt would start as little things like placing a few innocent bets on Monopoly, but they seemed minor to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.connexontario.ca\/en-ca\/resource-hub\/entryid\/14\/five-signs-you-may-have-a-gambling-problem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Connex Ontario<\/a>, a Mental Health, Addiction, and Problem Gambling Services site, one sign of gambling is if your loved ones think you have a problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Ryan said that her son\u2019s mood has changed since the moment her husband let him place an online bet for his eighteenth birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy husband always tells me that I\u2019m making a big deal out of this or that I\u2019m overreacting, but he doesn\u2019t see what this is doing to our son,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techaddiction.ca\/gambling-addiction-signs-symptoms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tech Addiction,&nbsp;<\/a> the symptoms of gambling include using gambling as a way to deal with problems or lying to family members and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Let\u2019s say your partner or parent has an addiction, you\u2019re more than likely to pick up on that addiction.<\/p><cite>Shawn Rumble<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Ryan noticed when her son began isolating himself, which is one behaviour of gambling addiction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In just one year, the new legal iGaming market in Ontario has delivered about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.igamingontario.ca\/en\/news\/ontario-emerges-one-north-americas-largest-igaming-markets-first-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$35.6 billion<\/a> in total wagers, and approximately $1.4 billion in total gaming revenue, placing the province among the top 5 iGaming jurisdictions in North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>iGaming officially opened one year ago on April 4, 2022. As part of its efforts to establish a legal framework, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agco.ca\/blog\/lottery-and-gaming\/apr-2023\/one-year-anniversary-ontario-internet-gaming-market-new-study-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario<\/a> (AGCO) worked to allow single-event betting in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shawn Rumble, an addiction specialist and therapist in Windsor, Ont., said that it\u2019s easier for someone to develop an addiction if it runs in the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to risk factors, normalization within the family is one. Let\u2019s say your partner or parent has an addiction, you\u2019re more than likely to pick up on that addiction,\u201d Rumble said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rumble said several protective factors fall under the category of addiction that a person can easily spot.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAddiction is a very isolating disorder, and this is general for all addictions,\u201d Rumble said. \u201cIt comes with a loss of interest in things that they once enjoyed, and it can vary from person to person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/compulsive-gambling\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Mayo Clinic<\/a>, there are several risk factors when it comes to the online betting market, such as mental health issues, age, characteristics, and influence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study reported that recreational gamblers either give up when they lose or set a maximum amount they&#8217;re willing to lose. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/compulsive-gambling\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compulsive gamblers&nbsp;<\/a>feel obliged to keep gambling to win back their money, a behaviour that worsens over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People with a compulsive gambling problem may experience periods of remission, a period when they gamble less or not at all. The remission, however, is usually not permanent without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/compulsive-gambling\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamblersanonymous.org\/ga\/content\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gamblers Anonymous&nbsp;<\/a>is a fellowship where men and women can come together to share their experiences and common problem for gambling. They follow a twelve-step program which is the initial foundation of AA, Alcoholics Anonymous. It is an anonymous program where only first names are required, but aims to help people who have addictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lu R., the Executive Director at Gamblers Anonymous located in Toronto, cannot provide her whole name because of the anonymity the group has. She said that her job is to help bring people together who are struggling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe believe that we can abstain but are we ever really cured,\u201d she said. \u201cThe medical industry has now qualified addiction as a disease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lu said that addictions are incurable but Gamblers Anonymous has a mission to help individuals with their recovery journey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWill it ever go away completely? You know for myself, I\u2019d have to say no,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/gambling-disorder\/what-is-gambling-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The American Psychiatric Association&nbsp;<\/a>said that repeated gambling behaviour is a sign of a gambling disorder. The actions cause issues for the person, their families, and society as a whole, such as having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/gambling-disorder\/what-is-gambling-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frequent thoughts&nbsp;<\/a>about gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derek Longmeier, the Executive Director at Problem Gambling Network of Ohio, said that the outcome for gambling addictions are all the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got family history that is one, ageist, first youth is another, so the earlier someone starts, the more likely they are to develop a problem,\u201d Longmeier said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that a history of substance abuse and mental health disorders can also be a risk factor for gambling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pgnohio.org\/\">Problem Gambling Network of Ohio<\/a> offers assistance and support to help improve Ohio&#8217;s problem gambling service system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur focus is really making sure that we have resources available to Ohio once you need them,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/bet-on-yourself-the-process-of-gambling-addiction-recovery-0919187#:~:text=Gambling%20addiction%20is%20a%20treatable,to%20deal%20with%20psychological%20pain.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Good Therapy,&nbsp;<\/a>a blog that focuses on addiction and recovery, it\u2019s possible to get treated for gambling addiction.
